THE WALK OFF |
| |
APRIL 10, 2010 |
|
|
| |
Four powerhouse fashion firms – BCBGeneration, Rent the Runway, post.fashionism, and Kembrel- representing a wide spectrum of the fashion industry from design to retail to media. One Ivy League campus – the University of Pennsylvania. On April 8th, 2010, the first ever designer fashion show took place on Penn's campus to expose the next generation of affluential, fashion-conscious consumers and business leaders to the industry's leading fashion labels. Hosted by Tony Wang of post.fashionism, a nationally acclaimed fashion blog, the WALK OFF was a fashion show and modeling contest featuring current season pieces from designers such as Proenza Schouler, Prabal Gurung, and Christian Siriano.. The audience voted for the best model and the winner receives prizes such as a photoshoot with photographer Natalie Franke.
The show was a great success, with seats filling up and a line of eager attendees waiting at the entrance. We booked out the venue within a week of announcing the show, so we had to close registration much earlier than we expected! (Sorry for those who couldn't RSVP for the show, next year we'll get a much larger venue!)
We were proud to be graced with thepresenceof Lara Crystal, Director of Marketing of Rent the Runway; Cherif Habib,Romain Kapadia, and Stephan Jacob, co-founders of Kembrel; and Ethan N, editor of Titans and Company. The four key sponsors for the show were BCBGeneration, Rent the Runway, Kembrel, and post.fashionism. BCBGeneration provided the gift bags for attendees, Rent the Runway and Kembrel provided designer outfits for use in the show, and yours truly was the show coordinator.
Congratulations to Bree Arditi for winning the WALK OFF!

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK | MEETING THE FAMOUS BLOGGERS |
| |
MARCH 1, 2010 |
|
|
| |
There's always something exciting about physicallly meeting people you hear about, read about, and see online. It is the season of the bloggers. Social media has democratized fashion, and even a 13-year old girl can became a great style icon.
However, blogging is still a vastly unexplored form of content genenration. The rules and conventions are still very fluid. Even the government recently created laws governing the way samples and endorsements must be disclosed by bloggers. And of course, there is the issue of how the established fahsion world interacts with us bloggers.
That's why Jennine of The Coveted and the Indepdenent Fashion Blogger's association (IFB) held a conference entitled IFB: Evolving Influence. Bloggers from around the nation converged at this event, which was held in NY during Fashion Week in a center close to Bryant Park - note: this was an amazing location since I was able to go from convention to show to convention to show quite easily.
Attending the convention were bloggers who were extremely well read to those who were just starting. Some heavy hitters at the conference included Tavi Genson of Style Rookie, Bryanboy, Susie from Style Bubble, Scott of The Sartorialist, Garance of Garance Dore, and more! (I would like to think that yours truly of post.fashionism would fit into that category, but alas!)

BCBGENERATION SPRING 2009 COLLECTION HIGHLIGHT VI |
| |
MAY 3, 2009 |
|
|
| |
The beautiful contrast created by mixed media is really showcased in this piece. The knit top layered by the woven shirt underneath creates a highly structured look that gives a strong impression. The top's extra padding on the shoulder makes the model look more composed, in control, and confident. However, to counteract this in a complementary manner, the shirt underneath has a more relaxed look.
The end result is a piece that creates an air of a confident urban professional who is out of the office in a casual setting.

BCBGENERATION SPRING 2009 COLLECTION HIGHLIGHT V |

This look is harder to combine and customize, but offers a strong piece. It just goes to show how much work goes into creating a truly comprehensive look that synergizes and makes the model look truly stunning.
The white shawl is a great piece for almost any season but really works as a Spring piece since its knit fabrication gives off a relaxed but composed look.
The yellow shirt is a basic item that can be easily used for other outfits.
The silver shingled top is a real winner. This piece is truly stunning, eye catching, unique and best of all - versatile. You can layer it for a weekend clubbing excursion or for a weekend picnic with family and friends.
The boot is also a great addition since it adds a flare of adventure to the look that makes the model both elegant but not fragile. She is an ambitious woman who knows how to impress but still leaves a strong aftertaste.

BCBGENERATION SPRING 2009 COLLECTION HIGHLIGHT IV |

Once again, customizability. This look is all about how the collection can create cohesive, wonderful looks while enabling the Generation girl to combine and create her own looks.
The top here is a gem because of its subtle complexity. From far away, this top seems to be solid purple. However, upon closer inspection, the top is actually a wonderful mosaic of floral patterns. Once again, this showcases BCBGeneration's maturity in prints but also shows that it has its edgy side too.
Just don't wear this to class during a test or else everyone else will stare at your pattern. Or that could be your intention too.

BCBGENERATION SPRING 2009 COLLECTION HIGHLIGHT III |

MAY 3, 2009 |

Once again, BCBGeneration has outdone itself! The theme's strong philosophy of simple, classic elegance really shines here. The use of a loose sleeve then a tighter fit accentuates the body in the right places and adds a carefree touch to the wearer's looks. The ribbon in the middle is also important for fitting the shirt tighter and looser so as to best fit the wearer.
The dark pants are classic and an important must-have for any fashionista as it enables her to mix and match so many tops. The versatile nature of this pant often goes unnoticed, but it's really important to remember when buying clothing since you'll want to combine different looks to create new ones.
Her purse is also a simple accessory that shows off how easy her look is to change and customize.
This look shows that Generation is highly customizable and that the customer has the freedom to choose her own look within the Generation line that is unique and allows her to express herself.

BCBGENERATION SPRING 2009 COLLECTION HIGHLIGHT II |

This so happened to be our favorite among favorites from this season's collection. The inspiration from Herve Leger is clear in the center-piece ruffles.
What makes this piece so strong is its elegant simplicity. A solid color that is not too yellow to hurt the eye but not too mellow to become blasé makes this piece's simplest part its most attractive part. The use of a diagonal ruffle fold adds texture and depth to the piece, showing that true fashion doesn't have to be overly complex.

BCBGENERATION SPRING 2009 COLLECTION HIGHLIGHT I |

This print creates a luxurious, dreamy, mysterious look that creates a subtle drama. A feast for the eyes, this print shows how far BCBGeneration has come along in developing the use of prints in its line, which has increased in frequency over the past few seasons. My favorite part of this dress is the space-like, almost astral feeling this dress gives off.
Luigi Caiati, Account Executive for To The Max, noted to us how this print dress is a culmination of sorts for BCBGeneration's use of prints. Many of BCBGeneration's print dresses have been real winners, showing the line's ability to continue to innovate and provide truly trendy clothing.
We love the print on this one and know this dress is a winner too.

BCBGENERATION AT UPENN'S SPRING FLING! |
| |
APRIL 21, 2009 |
|
|
| |
The largest student festival on the East Coast, Spring Fling is held at the University of Pennsylvania every year during April. This year's Spring Fling drew thousands of students as student bands performed, food vendors displayed their goodies, and carnival style activities such as moonbounces were set up.
Since so many students come out to this event in one location, BCBGeneration couldn't miss out on the excitement! We reserved a booth early, early on in the year so we were able to get a prime location. We got the second booth from the entrance meaning that we were among the first booths students saw when entering and leaving the festival site. We got traffic of thousands of students (we stopped counting after an hour) and repped BCBGeneration's name!
Here are some pictures of our booth!

|
|

The ASU 5th Annual Charity Auction was a great success, raising over $700 for Save the Children, a non-profit organization that aims to provide aid to impoverished children in the United States.
The hall we reserved was packed and certainly met our turnout expectation of around 150 participants.
BCBGeneration tote bags and shirts were the hottest items with girls literally begging to have more items raffled off.
Here are some pictures for you to enjoy!

BCBGENERATION MENTIONED IN THE DAILY PENNSYLVANIAN |

Panel questions the survival of luxury By Olivia Jung; Daily Pennsylvanian | April 1, 2009
"Our customers used to want a big shopping bag with our label on it to carry around after their purchase. But now, they just want a simple brown bag," pronounced Roxanne Paschall, Senior Director of Merchandising of Bottega Veneta.
"It's like they don't want to flaunt their wealth anymore," she said.
Last night, panelists discussed this phenomena and the broader issue of the survival of the luxury industry in the current economic times as part of Penn Fashion Week 2009. The conversation took place in Steinberg-Dietrich Hall and was moderated by Erin Armendinger, the Managing Director of the Jay H. Baker Retailing Initiative at Wharton.
Incorporating different luxury sectors such as fashion, cars, food and entertainment, the panel consisted of representatives from Rolls-Royce, Maserati, Bloomingdale's, the entertainment industry in New York City and Stephen Starr, owner of restaurants such as Pod and Tangerine.
Starr spoke about "managing perception" in determining the right price and catering to customers in today's financial crisis. He emphasized that it is important to "make the customers feel comfortable, without reminding them about the current state of the economy."
Accordingly, Starr said rather than lowering existing prices, he adds cheaper options to the menu.
Other panelists agreed, highlighting the integrity of brand image and the uniqueness of luxury goods.
Winnie Feng, a Wharton freshman, was drawn to the event due to her interest in fashion and work experience in retail. She commented that she could also relate her classes to the discussion.
Similarly, Wharton junior Erin Godines also found the discussion relevant to her studies in marketing and retail. She added that "the banter amongst each panelist and their uninhibited discussion was interesting."
The event drew a packed and varied audience. According to Wharton junior and one of the event organizers Susan Ho, the diverse composition of the panel attracted both males and females.
"I was fascinated by the speakers in the car industry, as most males here were," said Wharton sophomore Tyler Myerberg. "The speakers were impressive, and it was definitely worth my time."
Fashion Week is sponsored by Macy's, Inc. and BCBGeneration, and organized by Dzine2Show, business fraternity Delta Sigma Pi and Wharton Retail Initiative.

FASHION FRIDAYS! (WE KNOW, IT'S LATE) |
| |
MARCH 29, 2009 |
|
|
| |
On every Friday, Brave New Generation will bring you the hottest new trends that are happening on campus.
This one comes a little late- but we promise to get better about making sure Fashion Friday articles are actually posted on Friday! This one comes from the QBall at the XO Lounge. As exclusive VIP guests to the event, Brave New Generation got to check out the fashion scene and look into a potential venue for future events. We found this student in a beautiful Asian-inspired floral print that we just had to select as the winner for this week!
-----------
Tony: I really love the color combination in this one. Red and black are classics and very common in Japan. The style of the dress itself is Chinese so the cross-combination of two Asian countries' motifs is really refreshing.
Flora: The floral print here is really unique. I enjoy the use of cherry blossoms which are distinctly Asian. The flowers seen here are not commonly found in floral prints, which have become popular again as the season warms up a bit.
Megha: The fit and construction of this piece is so flattering. The use of a sleeveless dress, tight fit, and high neck results in a piece that it refined, sophisticated, and sexy.
This one's a keeper.

BRAVE NEW GENERATION MARKETING CAMPAIGN UPDATE | PANHELLENIC VISIT | PLANNING PART 1 |
| |
MARCH 23, 2009 |
|
|
| |
Welcome back from Spring Break!
(And for those of you on or yet to go on break -- lucky you!)
Welcome to the BCBGeneration blog! We are Brave New Generation, the University of Pennsylvania branch of the BCBGeneration college initiative.
We're so excited to be able to share with all of you our events, ideas, and marketing campaigns. So be sure to stay updated by checking the blog.
Other campuses will be updating information as well- and you never know what kind of goodies you'll get from them. =]
Brave New Generation is proud to announce that its marketing campaign directly targeted at the Penn Greek system was a great hit. Our marketing campaign is to drive awareness and promote a healthy buzz of our Panhellenic BCBGeneration Competition. We personally visited and promoted this event to the eight participating sororities, which comprise the Panhellenic Council at Penn. These sororities are...
- Alpha Chi Omega
- Alpha Phi
- Chi Omega
- Delta Delta Delta
- Kappa Alpha Theta
- Phi Sigma Sigma
- Sigma Delta Tau
- Sigma Kappa
These pictures will show you our team working hard on creating the first part of our campaign -- creating a professional and encouraging letter to the sororities.
Sadly, our printer died right as we tried to print them. Que lastima. Luckily, we were able to run to the admin office in the lobby to print out our lovely letters.
Unfortunately, there's a limit to how many pictures we can attach to each blog post.
So stay tuned for part dos!
