This holiday season designer retailer Intermix is teaming up with Art Production Fund to bring reproductions of Richard Phillips' original artwork to the masses. For those of you who are not familiar with Richard Phillips just tune into the CW at 9/8c on Monday evenings. Phillips' 1998 piece "Spectrum" can be seen hanging in the stairwell of the Van der Woodsen penthouse.
Known for his large-scale paintings, Richard Phillips brings pop-art styling as well as some serious sex appeal to the art world. He often incorporates images from vintage fashion spreads, as well as the paintings of Andy Warhol and Mel Ramos and translates them into his glossy hyper-realistic paintings. Phillips' says "My pictures involve a kind of wasted beauty -that's always been a thread in my work". Not since Andy Warhol's 1985 cameo on Love Boat has contemporary art made such an impression on prime time television. Richard Phillips' "Spectrum" has certainly made a splash on Gossip Girl. Although the painting was originally inspired by a fashion advertisement from the late 1960's, Phillips' commented that "on set they remarked that it looks a lot like Leighton Meester."
Each 30'' x 36.5'' canvas print retails for $250, and the proceeds benefit the non-profit Art Production Fund. The Art Production Fund helps artists reach new audiences as well as expand public participation, and understanding of contemporary art. These pieces are limited addition, so hurry on over to Intermix.com to get your Richard Phillips canvas print. If Serena Van der Woodsen owns it, it's gotta be right!
