| NORMAN MUSIC FESTIVAL |
| APRIL 26, 2010 |
|
|
|
This past weekend University of Oklahoma students, including your student ambassadors, rolled out to downtown Norman for the third annual Norman Music Festival. Beginning in 2008, Norman Music Festival caught the attention of Normanites and Oklahomans alike with free attendance, and a stylistic-catchall lineup. The festival has become such a big event that it has expanded from one day to two, and Oklahoma Governor has declared Sunday, April 25 to be "Norman Music Festival Day". Headliners this year included The Dirty Projectors and The Electric Six. Although the official numbers have yet to be released, it is estimated that attendance was even high this year than last year's record of 13,000 attendees. With it's growing popularity Norman Music Fest has proven to be a fun local event welcoming national artists with open arms. | THE BRAIDY BUNCH |
| APRIL 18, 2010 |
|
|
It's no secret that Spring/Summer braids are here to stay. This breezy 'do is perfect for any occasion, and a great way to get your hair out of your face during the warmer months.
How To:
- Part your hair down the middle creating two separate equal sections on either side of your head.
- Secure each side with elastics just behind your ears.
- Braid each side, it's important that your braids are not too loose or too tight.
- Bring the right braid up over your head and secure with bobby pins.
- Continue by bringing the left braid up and over the top of your head, be sure to tuck the elastic underneath so it doesn't show.
- Secure both sides with bobby pins so your braids won't come loose.
- And last but not least, hair spray!

| PAST THEIR PRIME POLISHES |
| APRIL 8, 2010 |
|
|
Like most beauty products, nail polish goes bad. Their shelf life is typically about 1-2 years long. Rather than tossing out last year's shades, here are a few ways to get the most out of your old polishes:
1-Differentiate the keys on your keychain with the swipe of a brush.
2- Put life back into chipped pottery and scuffed up shoes
3- Keep buttons in place! Apply a coordinating polish over the unraveling thread to the button to seal it in place.

| SWAP TIL' YOU DROP! |
| FEBRUARY 22, 2010 |
|
|
The warmer months are just around the corner, and it's time to consider freshening up last year's Spring wardrobe. Clothing swap parties are becoming increasingly popular, and are a fantastic way to clean out and jazz up your closet! And not to mention they are inexpensive and economically friendly.
To set up a Swap Party:
Invitations- Whether you chose to invite your friends via email, Facebook, or formal invitation be sure to give them plenty of time to clean out their closets. The more time they have, the more items they will bring. Three to four weeks should provide an appropriate amount of time.
Put your party pants on- Like any good hostess be sure to provide your guests with cute finger foods and a signature cocktail.
Ground Rules- Many people have never been to a swap party before. Make sure they understand that some things aren't exactly acceptable to bring such as- personal items (used undies? thanks but no thanks!), and items with stains and tears that are beyond repair. Also be sure to set a minimum, by setting a minimum there will be a broader selection for your guests to swap.
Accessories are welcome-Clothing swap parties aren't limited to just clothes! Not everyone is the same size, make sure your guests know to bring other items (jewelry, belts, hats, purses) so everyone is guaranteed to leave with something.
Give back - If there are any leftover items take them to your local Goodwill. To find a Goodwill near you simply visit www.goodwill.org

|
|
The holidays are upon us, and that means it's time to get out your party pants, or should I say skirts! This season, the metallic mini is the way to go.Although most people prefer dresses- there is less planning involved, metallic mini skirts are a refreshing alternative to the traditional holiday cocktail dress.
BCBGeneration's pleated metallic skirt is a prime example of chic holiday flair. When paired with simple basics this metallic mini skirt provides an effortlessly cool holiday look that is hard to ignore.

| BCBGENERATION TAKES SEVEN47 BY STORM! |
| DECEMBER 13, 2009 |
|
|
BCBGeneration made a splash at the Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy fundraiser held at Seven47. Complete with a live music from Dinosaur Trio and drink specials, the event was a big hit. Several OU students came out to let their hair down one last time before finals week arrived. The BCBGeneration t-shirts and tote bags were welcomed with open arms, and in return Amanda and I received a lot of great feedback regarding the brand. Thanks to everyone who came out to support your fellow Sooners!

| ERIN LUCAS INTERVIEW: |
| DECEMBER 4, 2009 |
|
|
Sexy? Hip? Sophisticated? Bold? There truly are not enough words to describe the effortlessly cool style of Erin Lucas. The daughter of AC/DC's Cliff Williams, Erin Lucas made a name for herself on the first season of MTV's The City. With her hip down-town style, Erin is certainly not afraid of taking chances when it comes to her wardrobe. Her adventurous attitude is certainly something to strive for when experimenting with new trends.
I am thrilled to announce that I got an opportunity to interview Erin about her personal style, fashion influences, and a few guilty pleasures.
If you could describe your personal style in one word, how would you describe it?
Does "trial-and-error" count as one word? ;)
You're not afraid to take risks, what are some fall/holiday trends you can't wait to try out?
I'm kind of obsessed with high waisted cuffed leather shorts right now. Perfect weather to pair with tights!
If you could name a nail polish what would you call it, and what color would it be?
Sparky! It would be bright orange. (that was my nickname in summer camp)
What item of clothing do you wish people would stop wearing?
Any trend Paris Hilton rocks…
In moments of weakness you…
May or may not, on occasion, succumb to a chocolate chip cookie. Or two.
Who or what is your greatest fashion influence?
I am influenced by everything that surrounds me... New York City is such a colorful place to live, in so many ways. People take it to the next level here and really experiment with their fashion. I like to take ideas and combine them to make my own look. I respect women like Chloe Sevigny, The Olsen Twins and Fabiola Beracasa for their exceptional sense of style.
What's on your holiday wishlist?
A good mix-tape. Oh, and Wii super Mario cart.
What is the one question you wished people asked you, but you've never had the opportunity to answer? (And what is the answer?)
Oh, that's a great question. Definitely "How did you get so damn lucky, Erin?" And you know what, I wonder that every day - and thank my lucky stars!

| ON MY WISH LIST: RICHARD PHILLIPS CANVAS PRINTS |
| NOVEMBER 13, 2009 |
|
|
This holiday season designer retailer Intermix is teaming up with Art Production Fund to bring reproductions of Richard Phillips' original artwork to the masses. For those of you who are not familiar with Richard Phillips just tune into the CW at 9/8c on Monday evenings. Phillips' 1998 piece "Spectrum" can be seen hanging in the stairwell of the Van der Woodsen penthouse.
Known for his large-scale paintings, Richard Phillips brings pop-art styling as well as some serious sex appeal to the art world. He often incorporates images from vintage fashion spreads, as well as the paintings of Andy Warhol and Mel Ramos and translates them into his glossy hyper-realistic paintings. Phillips' says "My pictures involve a kind of wasted beauty -that's always been a thread in my work". Not since Andy Warhol's 1985 cameo on Love Boat has contemporary art made such an impression on prime time television. Richard Phillips' "Spectrum" has certainly made a splash on Gossip Girl. Although the painting was originally inspired by a fashion advertisement from the late 1960's, Phillips' commented that "on set they remarked that it looks a lot like Leighton Meester."
Each 30'' x 36.5'' canvas print retails for $250, and the proceeds benefit the non-profit Art Production Fund. The Art Production Fund helps artists reach new audiences as well as expand public participation, and understanding of contemporary art. These pieces are limited addition, so hurry on over to Intermix.com to get your Richard Phillips canvas print. If Serena Van der Woodsen owns it, it's gotta be right!

| BOYFRIEND BLAZERS |
| NOVEMBER 8, 2009 |
|
|
I love boyfriend blazers. They are fantastic! I feel confident when I say that this trend will be around for a long time. Boyfriend blazers are great for pulling together an outfit in a pinch and adding structured interest to the most feminine of outfits. Although the boyfriend blazer can be worn a number of ways, here are three fabulous ways to showcase this trend:
- With leggings or slim pants. By mixing opposite volumes, you create strong visual interest.
- When you pair a boyfriend blazer with a mini skirt or mini dress you add delightful contrast to your going-out attire.
- For a more casual look wear your boyfriend blazer with a pair of cuffed boyfriend jeans. Take this outfit a step further by topping it off with some sky-high heels.
If you have yet to pick up a boyfriend blazer for this fall/winter I highly recommend you do so. They can be worn with just about anything and are an incredible way to update your wardrobe with a classic yet modern twist.

| I SEE LONDON, I SEE FRANCE... |
| OCTOBER 28, 2009 |
|
|
|
One of this season's biggest trends is displaying hints of your lingerie, but who would have thought that the bra-bearing looks seen on the runways would eventually lead to the revealing of garter-belts? Seen on the legs of many red-carpet regulars, garter-belts are quickly transforming from underwear to outerwear. So how about it ladies? Will you be showcasing your skivvies this fall?

| MY TOP 5 HALLOWEEN MOVIES |
| OCTOBER 25, 2009 |
|
|
One of my favorite holidays is almost here! You guessed it, Halloween! I love the candy, the costumes, and the spooky delights that this holiday brings, but most of all I love Halloween movies. I thought it would be fun to share my top five Halloween flicks with you. Although I love the thrill of scary movies, I have narrowed my list down to movies that everyone can enjoy. (That's my official story, but the truth is that Paranormal Activity has turned me off of scary movies for the time being, but let's just keep that between us.)
5. Halloweentown: 1998's Halloweentown is a Disney Channel classic. It tells the tale of twelve year old Marnie and her siblings Dylan and Sophie, and their adventures with their grandmother in Halloweentown. This movie is so cute and fun to watch, and it takes me right back to the sixth grade.
4. Idle Hands: Starring Devon Sawa, Jessica Alba, Seth Green, and Vivica A. Fox, Idle Hands is one of my favorite Halloween treats. Made in 1999, this movie combines comedy and horror to make a hilarious Halloween movie. Idle Hands follows seventeen year old Anton as he experiences what happens when you spend the best days of your life as a couch potato.
3. Hocus Pocus: I love love love Hocus Pocus. How could you not? It combines two of my favorite things, Halloween and Sarah Jessica Parker! 1993's Hocus Pocus tells the story of three witches that are brought back from the dead by teenage Max, who then gets caught in a fun-filled chase with the witches.
2. Rocky Horror Picture Show: A 1975 cult classic, the Rocky Horror Picture Show is more than just a movie, it's a hobby. This film is still popular today, and is shown regularly at theaters all across the United States. Not only is it customary to come to a showing dressed as your favorite Rocky Horror character, but it is prudent that you participate. That's right, participate. Modern showings of the movie require audience members to shout ad-libs as well as use props.
1. Teen Witch: I chose Teen Witch as my number one Halloween movie because it's more than one of my favorite Halloween movies. It is one of my favorite movies in general. Originally released in 1989, Teen Witch narrates the story of unpopular Louise who discovers that she is a reincarnated witch. From the music to the fantastic eighties attire I truly love it all.
I hope that you enjoyed my countdown of my favorite Halloween movies. As the spookiest night of the year approaches, I hope that you find the time to watch one of these fantastic flicks. They will surely bring out your inner trick-or-treater. What are your favorite Halloween movies?

| INFINITY SCARVES |
| OCTOBER 11, 2009 |
|
|
What is an infinity scarf? An infinity scarf is a scarf that has no loose ends and is one continuous loop. Perfect for layering, infinity scarves have been declared fall's "it" accessory. Celebrities such as Hilary Duff are huge fans of the infinity scarf, and will continue to be spotted wearing this cozy trend throughout the upcoming colder months.
The most popular ways to wear fall's "it" accessory are long like a necklace, or doubled up for extra warmth. However, the scarf's unique design invites you to play around and put your own twist on it. So dear readers, as the leaves begin to change and the weather gets colder, I encourage you to take part in this cute and cozy trend.

| VISION BOARDS |
| OCTOBER 4, 2009 |
|
|
A vision board or treasure map is a collage of images that represent the hopes and dreams you have for the future. Vision boards inspire positivity and are thought to put the laws of attraction into motion. Oprah Winfrey is a big believer in vision boards, and she has been known to make them on several occasions.
It's very easy to make a vision board. All you need is a poster or canvas (my roommate and I decided to use canvas since it looks nicer), several magazines, and some glue. Cut out images and words from the magazines that represent your wants and wishes and glue them onto your vision board. Be sure to hang your vision board in a place where you will see it often. The idea is to surround yourself with images that represent what you want, who you want to become, and where you want to end up. Hopefully the laws of attraction will allow your life to change to match your chosen images.
Although the philosophy of vision boards may seem a little "out there," they are a lot of fun to make, and who couldn't use a little more positivity?

| FREE MUSIC |
| SEPTEMBER 27, 2009 |
|
|
|
As a music lover, I am constantly searching for new and unique artists. This process can often become tedious, and filled with buyers remorse from purchasing songs that I am unfamiliar with. I recently came across www.rcrdlbl.com, an online record label that promotes new and established musicians by offering songs and other media for free! Although it seems too good to be true, the site is completely legal. The artists get paid for their efforts with money from advertisements. The website is also highly interactive with the option to submit comments, and you can customize the site to your musical preferences. I invite you to check out www.rcrdlbl.com, to experience new music without a pricetag.
