Normally, people associate fashion with clothing, shoes, and accessories, but in the last few years, there has been a noticeable trend toward fashion entering the food industry. What makes a food trendy? Somehow certain food items go from deriving value solely based on taste to deriving value from intangible benefits such as how "cool" it is to be associated with these items. When I think of food fads, Pink Berry jumps to mind. While I personally agree with the general population that Pink Berry is absolutely delicious, I also recognize that their thriving business is attributable to more than just the quality of the yogurt. It stems from the brand, its name and everything it stands for. Ultimately it stems from marketing. Pink Berry has marketed itself so that it represents more than just a snack or a dessert; it represents a fashionable, cultural trend that tons of adolescents and young adults consciously or subconsciously like to be associated with. And Pink Berry is just one of many foods with this type of fashionable allure. 100 calorie packs, vitamin water, smart water are among the list of such trendy consumer goods. People buy into the brand or the concept as much as they buy into the item itself. I know I do it too!
Overall, these fashionable foods are so fascinating to me because they exemplify the strong link between marketing and fashion. Fashion doesn't only include clothing, and it certainly isn't always inherent in a product's design. Fashion comes in large part from the crafty, creative marketing that, when coupled with a good product, can make a huge impact in an industry, in our culture, and in the way we live our day-to-day lives.
